We just recently added Sari silk roving to our collection of fiber choices. It's a vibrant and unique material made from recycled sari fabrics, offering spinners an eco-friendly and colorful option for their projects. Its texture and fiber characteristics make it a fun challenge to spin, and from my experience it's very similar to spinning cotton.
Here are some tips to help you make the most of your experience spinning sari silk:
1. Prepare Your Workspace
Sari silk fibers will shed during spinning so be prepared for some cleanup especially on your clothes.
Place the silk in a smooth container to helps prevent the fibers from catching as you spin.
2. Blend for Ease of Spinning
If spinning pure sari silk feels tricky, blend it with wool, alpaca, or mohair. This adds structure and makes drafting smoother and not as short.
If you want 100% silk, the roving we have is ready to spin just use light tension on your wheel and use short drafts.
3. Manage the Texture
Sari silk roving has varying lengths and textures. Embrace its unique character for textured yarns. You'll occasional find larger lumps or VM that might warranty removal.
Spinning worsted weight is best with the texture of sari silk.
4. Adjust Your Technique
Use a lower tension on your wheel or spindle to ensure the short fibers are spun adequately. Do worry too much if you feel your over-spinning as the silk will relax.
After spinning your bobbin full, let the silk rest overnight before plying it.
5. Experiment with Colors
Sari silk roving’s vibrant colors create stunning visual effects. Experiment with single-ply yarns or ply with other fibers to enhance the colors and textures.

6. Care for Your Finished Yarn
Finished sari silk yarns are soft and strong, perfect for weaving, knitting, or embellishments.
Hand wash your yarn gently in cool water to preserve the fibers and colors.
Enjoy exploring the unique possibilities of sari silk roving and the vibrant character it brings to your spinning projects!
